About Paint It Black
Paint It Black is a lean, smoky woody eau de parfum for men, inspired by Armani Code by Giorgio Armani. It is built from very few notes, and that simplicity is its strength.
Bergamot and lemon open it, but not in the usual way. There is no sparkle here, no fizz; the citrus is darkened almost immediately, as if someone had turned the lights down. Within a few minutes olive flower appears, and it is a genuinely unusual note, green and slightly bitter with a soapy, clean-shaven quality that most people read as expensive rather than floral.
Then the base takes over and stays for the rest of the day. Guaiac wood is smoky, dry and resinous, like the inside of a cigar box, and tonka bean softens it with a warm, almond-and-vanilla sweetness. The two notes play off each other for hours: one dry, one sweet, neither ever winning.
This is a seduction fragrance that behaves like an office one. It is intimate rather than loud, which makes it unusually flexible. Wear it to work and it reads as clean and quietly expensive. Wear it out at night and it turns warm and close. Three sprays, applied to the chest rather than the neck, and let the guaiac settle. It is also a fragrance that improves after the first hour, so do not judge it in the shop.
If you love Armani Code
If you love Armani Code, Paint It Black belongs firmly to the same family. Both are built on a darkened citrus opening, an unusual olive flower heart and a smoky guaiac and tonka base, and both wear close to the skin rather than filling a room.
Ours is slightly smokier. The guaiac is more visible earlier, which shortens the citrus phase and pushes the fragrance towards its woody character sooner. The original carries a little more soapy sweetness through the middle; ours is drier and more austere. Longevity is good at seven hours or so, with gentle projection throughout. Paint It Black is inspired by that composition and shares a similar character, but it is our own creation with its own balance between smoke and sweetness.

When to wear it
Cool evenings suit it best, though its discretion makes it perfectly wearable to work in autumn and winter. It is a natural choice for dates, dinners and anywhere you want to be noticed only by the person beside you. Three sprays on the chest, under a shirt. Most wearers are happy with the 50ml at R120, since it is a fragrance for regular rather than heavy use.

Does Paint It Black smell like Armani Code?
It shares the same darkened citrus and smoky guaiac character that defines Armani Code. Ours is an original composition inspired by that fragrance rather than a reproduction, and the smoke arrives a little sooner.
Why does it smell different after an hour?
The opening citrus is deliberately short. Once the guaiac wood and tonka take over, the fragrance changes character completely, so judge it about an hour after applying.
Is this a good office fragrance?
It is one of the best. It sits close to the skin and reads as clean and understated, so it works in shared spaces where a bigger fragrance would not.
Which size should I choose?
Because it wears close, most people apply three sprays and get through a 30ml at R70 fairly quickly. If you plan to wear it weekly, the 100ml at R200 is more economical.
